Constantly changing collections, new colours, cuts, combinations: Fashion is always on the move. The principle of the Capsule Wardrobe wants to counteract this development and inspires you to focus on the essentials, provides insights into your own consumer behaviour and is an expression of modern sustainability. Curating a capsule wardrobe of versatile pieces that you love and wear often will not only simplify your style but filling it with favourite pieces and encourages you to wear and appreciate your clothes longer. In this way you help reduce the need for new production, benefiting the environment.
What does Capsule Wardrobe mean?
The term "Capsule Wardrobe" was first used by London boutique owner Susie Faux in 1970. She defined the principle of the minimalist wardrobe, which consists of a few essential items of clothing that never go out of fashion. Faux limited the wardrobe at that time to 12 items - seasonally replenished with trendy items. The principle became popular with Donna Karan's "Seven-Easy-Pieces" collection in 1985.
The most important styling rules - how does the Capsule Wardrobe work?
A capsule wardrobe is simply a carefully curated collection of easily interchangeable items designed to maximize the number of outfits you can create. A capsule wardrobe allows you to create a variety of different looks with a small selection of clothes. We'll show you how.
Analyse your actual wardrobe.
What do you like to wear the most? And what not at all anymore? Get an overview and clean out all the clothes you haven't worn in the last three months. Items that you wear regularly may be put back in your closet - but only if they fit the current season, otherwise store them until the appropriate season has come.
Define your own colour palette.
Colour is the most important thing when it comes to choosing your clothes. Which colours suit you? Which ones combine well? A good approach for a well-functioning Capsule Wardrobe is a maximum of four basic colours such as black, white, dark blue and beige, which fit both your style and your needs. The important thing is that the clothes can be combined with each other. And when it comes to accessories, you can play with bolder colours.
Create a base.
Based on your lifestyle and individual colour scheme, choose an exemplary basic outfit that you really love. This will then form the backbone for your Capsule Wardrobe. We recommend: Go for basics and timeless classics. The pieces should be easy to combine. Choose high-quality, durable, and season-independent garments for the base layer.
Test your current outfits.
Before you buy new clothes, try to work with the clothes you already have in your closet. If you have already found your personal style, you only need a few pieces to complement it and a little patience. Take your time to get used to your deliberately assembled closet. In the end, you will be rewarded with more space in your own closet and a good feeling.
Check possible combinations.
A Capsule Wardrobe does not mean that you must get rid of your favourite statement pieces: You can also keep patterned and colourful designs, they work very well as highlights for your reduced wardrobe. Taking pictures of your favourite outfits can also help to remember a great outfit when you stand in front of your closet in the morning and have no idea what to wear.
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Remember that the decision to create a Capsule Wardrobe is meant to please you - the goal is not to limit you, but to make your everyday life easier with new creative combinations. If you find you're still missing suitable pieces for your wardrobe, buy them - after all, fashion should still be fun.
To enjoy them for a long time: How to care for your favourite pieces.
Your Capsule Wardrobe consists of your absolute favourite pieces of clothing. Of course, they should last a long time, so that you can enjoy them as long as possible. No problem with the right kind of garment care.
